MQFF 2024 Reviews
Once again I’m reviewing films at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival this year for The Queer Review. I’ve consolidated my reviews (and those by other Queer Review reviewers) here so they sit in the one place.

The Inheritance, Parts 1 & 2 (Seymour Centre) ★★★★½
Grab a cushion and strap yourself in for a literary, theatrical marathon because The Inheritance has finally come to Sydney!
-

Interview: Director Shane Anthony on The Inheritance. “It’s rare that we get these kinds of durational experiences in Sydney.”
Matthew López’s Olivier and Tony Award winning two-part drama, The Inheritance Parts 1 & 2, is finally coming to Sydney this month. Director Shane Anthony stepped out of rehearsals to have a quick chat about why The Inheritance is so beloved and still so timely.

Flat Earthers: The Musical (Griffin/Hayes) ★★½
What threw me was the fact this was a co-production between Hayes and Griffin, leading me to expect something with a slightly higher IQ than what we get.
-

Interview: Director Gary Abrahams on Yentl. “Sometimes you need to be self destructive to become who you’re meant to be.”
I got to have a brief chat with director Gary Abrahams who took a break from directing his new play to answer some of my questions about Yentl at the Sydney Opera House.

Titanique (The Grand Electric) ★★★★
It’s all seamen and Céline fucking Dion in Sydney at the moment. Full review on The Queer Review.
-

All Boys (KXT on Broadway) ★★★★
As a piece of independent theatre, All Boys is instantly impressive. For a budget-tight show full of debuts and recent drama school grads it is extraordinary. This is just great theatre.
-

Hillsong Boy (Sydney Fringe) ★★★½
The impulse to make this show a new form of “ministry” can be hard for a Hillsong survivor to resist.

Queer Screen Film Festival 2024
This year I’m reviewing films at the Queer Screen Film Festival 2024 (in cinemas 28 August – 1 September) for The Queer Review, so I’ve created a page to collate all the coverage.

Present Laughter (NT Live) ★★★★★
It’s a rare thing these days to watch a production without a bad note.
